In 2016 total funding dollars in the mobile app distribution sector maintained a steady decline from 2015 diving by 16% with overall funding rounds also dipping by 68%.
Fundraising count took a hit across the board-late stage falling by 50%, early by 87% and seed by 83%. Investment plunged for all three stages-10% in late, 92% in early and 25% in seed.
Top investments were few and far between with only two investments-Maple Media’s Series A round of $30M and Apptopia’s seed round of $3M taking place YTD. The acquisition scenario was marked by only three investments with alibabagroup.com picking up Wandoujia for $0.2B in 2016 being the highest disclosed deal value.
By stage of entry, 500 Startups came out top investor for seed, Accel Partners for Series A and B and Institutional Partners for later stage.
Historically, distribution platforms have amassed the highest investment ($737M) till date with app recommendation accounting for 43% of total dollars invested in this business model. Most active investors in this space include 500 Startups, Felicis Ventures, Accel Partners and Altos Ventures.
