According to recent estimations from the United Nations, 650 Million people, or one in 10 of the world’s population, do not have access to safe drinking water. Thankfully, there are many startups which are driving the way for a change, and here are some of the top ones:

Pittsburgh-based Redzone Robotics helps address this challenge through the use of robotics and Lidar messaging by automating pipe inspection for both drinking water and wastewater networks. Today, more than 200 municipalities worldwide use Redzone’s system.

Based in Ahmedabad, India, Doshion engineers, procures and constructs water and wastewater treatment plants, water retention and water supply structures on a turn-key basis. They also offer services like effluent and sewage transmission, distributing drinking water to rural and urban areas, in collaboration with government organizations.

Oasys Water helps solve the challenge of water scarcity by converting wastewater and saline water to clean water, through its integrated forward osmosis (FO) systems. It’s ClearFlo Water Transformation Solutions are used around the globe by various industrial markets and in areas of extreme water scarcity.

Proact provides environmental treatment equipment and services for soil, water, and air purification and treatment. The company treats on-site water treatment and has successfully treated water in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and South America.

Although not directly related to creating clean water, Algal Scientific develops treatment systems that remove and recover nutrients from wastewater using a proprietary algae-based process.  This produces biomass that can be used as fertilizer or as feedstock. The company is based in Michigan at a former Pfizer research facility.
